Oceanforged 1: The Wicked Ship

Oceanforged is a new five-book fantasy series illustrated by Alessia Trunfio and published by Affirm Press.

Set in an island nation on the brink of ruin, this series follows a plucky orphan named Cori (it rhymes with ‘glory’) who finds the magical gauntlet of an ancient dynasty of heroes. With the help of Tarn, a boy who can speak with animals; and Jem, a drop-out witch, Cori must make a perilous journey throughout the islands of Aquinta to find the Oceanforged Armour of the long-dead Champions. When the monsters are slain, the islands are reunified, and the incompetent Prime Council is overthrown, the Age of Glory will return and life in the archipelago will be peaceful again.

As they navigate coral reefs, volcanic peaks, mangrove swamps and bustling cities, Cori and her companions face pirates, sea monsters, storms, merfolk and the Prime Council’s forces. But deciding whom to fight against, fight beside, or fight for isn’t always obvious or easy. Some monsters aren’t what they seem.

This series takes inspiration from my interest in the natural sciences, with creatures based on animals both living and extinct, magic embedded in the rocks and soil of its world, and a thread of ecological themes.
