Welcome!

A photo of Amelia - a young white woman smiling at you, wearing a frilly dress and quirky earrings

I’m Australian author Amelia Mellor, best known for my historical fantasy novel The Grandest Bookshop in the World.

I was born in 1993 and I grew up in regional Victoria, writing stories all the way through school. I worked as a teacher out in the country for two years before becoming a full-time author. Now I live in Melbourne with lots of books and a big fish tank — a little like the Cole family! When I’m not writing, I like to work on craft projects, walk on the beach or in the bush, play indie puzzle games, and read dazzling new Aussie literature.

If you enjoy my books, don’t be shy — I love hearing from readers! I also have upcoming events where you can meet me, discover the joy of writing and get your books signed in person.

Book Week costume tips

In 2026, CBCA Book Week runs from Saturday the 22nd to Friday the 28th of August.

There’s no exact ‘right way’ to dress like my characters. Even the cover illustrations of my books are creative interpretations by the illustrators. They differ from how I imagine my characters — and I love that! It’s amazing to see how different readers put their spin on the same story!

But if you’re a busy parent looking for ideas, these suggestions from my Instagram may help.
